Wetherby & District Christmas Gift Appeal FAQ page

This is where we hope to answer your questions about the Christmas Gift Appeal. If you don't find the answer to your question hear, please contact us on 0113 265 0570 or 07872 040230, or pop into Margins Bookshop in Church Street between 10am and 2pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

HOW ARE THE GIFTS TO BE COLLECTED?

The main collection point is Margins Bookshop, Church Street, Wetherby. It is open from 10am to 2pm, Tuesday - Saturday. Other shops in Wetherby have also agreed to act as collecting points, so if Margins is closed, please try:.

  • Treasures Toys, down by the bridge, and
  • Vision Express, just moved to Market Place

WHAT GIFTS ARE APPROPRIATE?

The list on the right will give you some ideas, but it's not intended to be exhaustive. Gifts should be new, and suitable for children and young people aged up to 16.

HOW WILL THE GIFTS BE DISTRIBUTED?

Through their work with families and in schools, the Salvation Army is already in contact with many needy families, and they will be distributing the gifts among them.

SURELY THERE AREN'T THAT MANY NEEDY FAMILIES IN WETHERBY?

It is true that this area has a generally high standard of living, but there are many families who struggle to make ends meet, probably many more than we might expect. This is borne out by the experience of the Salvation Army working with children and families, and they have seen a marked increase in the number of families experiencing economic difficulties in the past few months.

DO YOU HAVE ANY GUIDELINES AS TO HOW MUCH THE GIFTS SHOULD COST?

No, there is no upper or lower limit, but we would anticipate that most gifts would be in the range £5 - £15.

SHOULD THE GIFTS BE WRAPPED?

No, please leave them unwrapped so that we can match them to the needs of the children.

CAN I GIVE PRE-OWNED [USED] GIFTS?

No, the gifts must be new and in their original packaging. If you have second-hand items suitable as gifts, why not take them to a charity shop? Wetherby has plenty to choose from.

CAN I GIVE SOME MONEY INSTEAD?

The nature of the appeal is that of local people helping out their less fortunate neighbours, so we would obviously prefer to receive gifts rather than money. However, we are prepared to accept financial donations, with the proviso that we reserve the right to use the money to help needy families in any way we think appropriate, not just to buy toys and gifts.

HOW FAR DOES THE "& DISTRICT" STRETCH TO?

We don't have a strict geographical limit, but as a rough guide, we anticipate helping families within 15 miles of Wetherby.

WILL I KNOW TO WHOM MY GIFT HAS BEEN GIVEN?

No, we are not able to provide that information. Likewise the recipient will not know by whom the gift has been donated. This is to protect the privacy of the child and the family.
